What does the "single file" manner of men walking say about their relationship?

Even though they work together, they are not necessarily friends. They act almost like a group of prisoners (which, in a sense they are) who have to do their slave-level labor that requires only that they do what the "boss" says. They line up and just go about their business with little thought going into the tasks they perform.
