Relationship between Candy and his dog

People say dogs are man's best friend. No other statement could better describe the relationship between Candy and his dog. Candy has been along side his dog for all of the dog's life and had much fun with him. As Candy lies down on his bed he recalls old memories, "Well hell. I had him so long. Had him since he was a pup. Herded sheep with him" (44). When Candy's dog is killed, Candy wishes he had done it himself. He feels guilty about not having shot the dog himself.
