What is George's analysis of Lennie's attack on the girl in Weed? Does it seem probable?

George just says that Lennie likes to touch soft things and panicked when the girl panicked. He says Lennie did not mean any harm, he's just "dumb." Certainly that seems like a probable explination for what Lennie has done.
