The setting in chapter one is pastoral and calm. There is much gentleness and beauty in the natural surroundings. Steinbeck emphasizes soft colors and warmth of the sun. Chapter 2 focuses on the ranch. The ranch is described in vary grey colors. There is a coldness and emptiness about it that is juxtaposed with the setting in chapter 1.
