The dream with the small plot of land that belongs to them, the rabbits and the chickens has a few flaws. For one thing, at that point, they both have no money. This is the depression and access to money is next to impossible for guys like George and Lenny. Another reason is that Lenny's history and mental capacity pretty much squashes any sort of permanent dream. George and Lenny are constantly on the run because of Lenny's "petting" problems.
