Most all of the characters in the story feel a sense of loneliness and isolation. We see this loneliness acutely in characters who feel estranged from their world like Curley's wife, Crooks, and Candy. Everybody is vulnerable and their emotions are reactions to this vulnerability. Curley has small guy complex and violently acts out to compensate for his low self-esteem. Curly's wife plays the role of the ranch temptress because she thinks that is all she has to offer in a ranch full of men. Each character acts out of a sense of isolation.
