I think Curley's violence towards others is both conscious and unconscious. Curley is perpetually angry but I don't believe he really knows why. He hates being small but never seems to grasp the consequences of his actions. Lennie simply lacks the mental faculties to be aware what he is doing at a given moment: especially moments that carry emotional pressure. The rest of the characters are conscious of what they are doing. Even Curley's wife, reduces to a mere possession of her husband, knows she is desperately lonely but cannot help herself when she flirts with the men. She is so desperate for even superficial human interaction.
