Lennie doesn't have a lot of common sense and he's very unaware of his surroundings. However, he's a very kind-hearted person and he has good intentions-he didn't mean to kill the puppy at all. Furthermore, Lennie doesn't even fully comprehend that the puppy is dead, so this is an example of Lennie not having common sense.
