Certainly the killing of Candy's dog foreshadows Lennie's death. The dog was deemed useless and a problem. Candy allows Carlson to kill him. Similarly Lennie becomes too much of a problem. Lennie, like Candy's dog, becomes too much of a liability for George to handle: Like Candy, George must kill what he loves.
