Oedipus Rex or Oedipus the King

Did Sophocles intend for his readers to regard Oedipus as a sympathetic figure?

Did Sophocles intend for his readers to regard Oedipus as a sympathetic figure and a good man who makes his decisions choosing from the highest motives, despite some of his Frailties?

In my opinion, Sophocles intended the audience to be sympathetic to Oedipus' plight. He makes wide use of dramatic irony in order to insure that the audience knows what is happening before the characters themselves. Thus, the audience knows what is coming, but ultimately hopes that they're wrong.
