Elizabeth Bates

Elizabeth Bates is the protagonist of the story. She is marred, has two children and carries one more under her heat. Her family life is not happy at all, for Walt spends too much time drinking. His death makes Elizabeth understand how little does she know about him.

Walt Bates

Walt Bates is Elizabeth’s husband and a miner. Just like the majority of other men of that time, he spends too much time in local pubs.

Mrs. Bates

Mrs. Bates is Walt’s mother.

Annie and John

Annie and John are Elizabeth and Walt’s children.

The Rigleys

The Rigleys are the Bates’ neighbors.
