Why might Peter have reached for his side when the soldiers approached the casket?

Chapter 10.

They were having a fake funeral to distract the soldiers from there real plans to smuggle Jews. When the soldiers went toward the casket Peter reached for his side. I was just wondering why.

I don't think this is explained. He might have been trying to lock the casket.
