The presence of Nazi troops changed Annemarie's world. Children no longer had the freedom to run. food shortages affected families, friends (Jews) were taken away and never heard from again. Homes were not private, any kind of provocation might be responsible for a knock at the door. Good people risked their own lives to save those most at risk. People more often than not lived in a constant state of fear.
