Besides war and social justice themes, this book is also a coming of age tale. Annemarie is a ten-year-old girl living in Copenhagen, Denmark with her family in 1943. Annemarie begins the book as innocent to the exact dangers around her but quickly understands the gravity of the situation. She matures past her fear to understand the important work that her parents and Uncle Henrik do:they save lives. They risk and sacrifice much by transporting Jews to safety. Annemarie shares in their risk and sacrifice. She loses much of her childhood innocence in joining her family in their important work.

That's true
