The Underground Man would seem to be a rather heinous person upon first glance--especially in regards to his treatment of Liza. He is woefully insecure, nihilisitic, and incredibly selfish. In another sense, however, the reader may find a certain point of solidarity with him in that he expounds his terrible condition with unflinching honesty. His "notes" leave no room for petty lies and their entailing comfort.
