Much of this story has to do with bribery and corruption. The rich run a corrupt bureaucracy which Obi Okonkwo becomes reluctantly embroiled in. Like many developing countries Nigeria does not have a large middle class. There is a small percentage of rich dominating a large percentage of poor.
