Feelings of hopelessness.

My father had huddled near me, draped in his blanket, shoul- ders laden with snow. And what if he were dead, as well? I called out to him. No response. I would have screamed if I could have. He was not moving. Suddenly, the evidence overwhelmed me: there was no longer any reason to live, any reason to fight.

Chapter 7

Role reversal.... Ellie and his father.

"Don't yell, my s o n ... H a v e pity on your old f a t h e r ... L e t me rest h e r e ... a l i t t l e ... I beg of you, I'm so t i r e d ... no more strength..."

He had become childlike: weak, frightened, vulnerable.

Chapter 8

Inability to grieve... feelings of freedom.

I did not weep, and it pained me that I could not weep. But I was out of tears. And deep inside me, if I could have searched the recesses of my feeble conscience, I might have found something like: Free at last!...
