The Jews of Sighet didn't believe Moishe because they believed the Russians would soon defeat the Nazis. They also didn't believe that the Nazis would invade Sighet..... let alone make their way into Hungary. After the arrival of the Nazis, the people of Sighet continue to believe themselves safe..... they do not believe the Nazis intend to exterminate the Jews. In addition, after the Nazis arrive, the soldiers appear to be friendly. They do not show their true intent until Passover.
