Why did the citizens resist the truth even when it was right in front of them?

The Jewish people had a deep and abiding faith in God. They didn't believe that God would allow the persecution to continue. They stood in their faith as God's chosen people. Rather than admit what was happening, the Jews in Sighet chose to pretend it wasn't happening.
