When Eliezer says he did not pass the test, what test is he referring to? Why did he feel he had failed?

In context, Eliezer is referring to his desire to protect and care for his father. The Rabbi's son abandoned his father, something that at the time, Eliezer didn't think that he could do. When Eliezer realizes that he has left his father behind in the cold, and that he has no desire to find him, and that even after finding him.... he begrudges him his soup, Eliezer realizes that like the Rabbi's son, he too has failed the test.
