what is the significance of the Rabbi's shaved face?

Here came the Rabbi, his back bent, his face shaved, his pack on his back.

Rabi's usually don't have their faces shaved. He shows up to be deported. There is an unreality to the situation that Elizer feels. Both the unorthodox shaving and the forced exodus from their homes has a surreal sense to it all.
