The head of the block tells Elie that there's nothing that can be done for his father..... not by the doctor..... not by Elie. He explains to him once again that in a concentration camp it's every man for himself, that in such a place there are no fathers, brothers, or friends..... there's only survival. He advises Elie to stop giving his own rations to a dying man, he cannot help his father while only hurting himself. Thus, although his father will die..... Elie has a chance to live.
