Time and again, the people of Sighet doubt the advance of the German army. Why?

The people of Sighet hear conflicting reports.... the Nazis are advancing, the Soviets will stop them, who would want to exterminate an entire people? The Jews listen to the stories but don't see any evidence for themselves..... not until the Germans actually invade.
