I think that is when he attended the synagogue. Elie might be a "believer" but I think his belief system has changed.

The moment you tell that his faith is not entirely broken was when he calls to god, "My God, Lord of the Universe, give me the strength to never do what Rabbi Elahou's son has done." He reaches out to god praying that he will never leave his father.
