Elie's faith in God is beginning to crack. He has lost much of his family and now sits in camp waiting to rot. He hears the prisoners sing Hasidic melodies and discuss religion and God. Elie doubts God's sense of justice and compassion. As many of the prisoners are rounded into a cattle car for Buna, Elie feels such great loss. The only saving grace is that his father is still with him.
