Elie describes himself as almost thirteen and "deeply observant." There was nothing Elie wanted more than to study the Kabbalah, but his father felt that he was too young. Elie didn't like his answer, so he found his own "master" to instruct him (he was tenacious). He was curious, hard working and studious.
