The Jewish people are forced into ghettos that are enclosed with barbed wirefences. Yet, despite their imprisonment, the people regard their situation ina positive light. Eliezer writes, “The ghetto was ruled by neither Germannor Jew; it was ruled by delusion.” Write a short paragraph explainingthis statement to a student in your class who doesn’t understand what thesentence means.

As long as the Jews held onto their hope, they were able to move from day to day. As their world changed, moving from one ghetto to the next, adhering to the rules put in place, going about their daily business.... the changes, though stressful, didn't prove to be life threatening, so as each changed occurred, the people simply conflormed and accepted. They were made complacent by their own delusions.
