Why does Elie include this memory of Rabbi Eliahu and his search for his son?

Elie realizes that the rabbi's son is no longer willing to risk death for a father who may not make it through this expewrience. Elie is ashamed because in many ways he feels like the rabbi's son about his own father. Elie can barely keep himself alive let alone worrying about an old man that probably won't survive anyways.
