How did the head of Eliezer’s block treat the men under his command, and why?

The head of the block was kind and free with advice meant to help the prisoners stay alive. We can infer that he treats them kindly because, he too, is a Pole. We learn later that he is removed from his position for being to lenient with the prisoners.
