I think they just hoped that the rumours and what they felt inside were untrue. They felt that the occupation was a temporary thing and maybe the Nazis were not so bad as they were made out to be. I think the majority of Jews in the town were in a heavy state of denial.

I believe The townspeople remained silent because they didn’t want their lives to change. They didn’t want everything to be different. Even when their community was gated in people still refused to accept something was about to happen. They knew that everything would completely change and nothing would ever be the same again.
