According to Ellie Wiesel, what was his purpose behind writing this novel?

Elie's purpose in writing this novel was to "bear witness" to an event he experienced that he understood "would be judged one day." Most of us cannot understand or even imagine the horrors, none-the-less, through Elie's words we see the horrors, as well as the period of time that led up to them.
