Coping Challenges for multiple generations living under one roof?

One strategy for coping with the challenges posed by low wages and high rents is to share an
apartment or hotel room. Think about the family structure and living
arrangements throughout the last century. Has marriage and family formation been a
social institution or an economic institution? What trends have been observed in extended
families (three generations living under one roof, or two older generations living under one
roof), and how do these relate to economic well-being?

Historically, families have often lived under one roof. In context, Ehrenreich is referring to both the extended family and extended housemates.... sharing the burden of bill payments. Multiple generations living under one roof allows for group care of the elderly, as well as the young.... it provides a sense of security. On the other side, these types of arrangements also cause a lack of privacy, increased responsibilites, and sometimes.... resentment.
