What was Kathy's and Tommy's topic? Why did Kathy pick the topic she picked?

Kathy chose the topic of Victorian novels for her essay. In Chapter 10, she admits that she hadn't thought much about the topic, that it had been kind of a random choice, and her teacher knew it.
"I remember when I went in to tell Miss Emily my chosen topic was Victorian novels, I hadn't really thought about it much and I could see she knew it."
I haven't been able to find Tommy's topic, I'll check a bit more.
