Helping Hand
Kathy watches as Tommy has an emotional breakdown after not being picked by the other boys at Hailsham. She goes to help him and be with him so he isn't alone. Ironically, Tommy slaps her as he's still in a fit of rage. Though he's struck her she understands that it wasn't on purpose and he's deeply embarrassed by his actions.
Rodney and Chrissie
Rodney and Chrissie take Tommy, Kathy and Ruth out into society in order to find out if they know who the contact is at Hailsham that can get them a deferral from having their organs harvested because they are in love. They heard that the contact is from the house they grew up in. Ironically none of the three have ever heard of this program nor someone to contact regarding it. This drives Rodney mad as his hope is in being able to spend more time with Chrissie before they complete.
Tommy and Ruth
Tommy and Ruth become a couple shortly after Kathy falls in love with Tommy as a young girl. Ironically, though Tommy is with Ruth he is actually in love with Kathy, but has chosen to be with the wrong woman.
Harvesting
Tommy has undergone two procedures thus far and is nearing completion. Ironically, he continues to make art because he believes that he will someday be granted a deferral to be with Kathy though he hasn't seen her in 10 years and he also doesn't know if the deferral program is real.
Looking for a Double
Ruth believes that Kathy was looking at dirty magazines because she was searching for what sex was like or that she has a preference towards women. She also tells Kathy that Tommy doesn't know why she was looking. Ironically, he does know and it's the exact reason she was looking: to find her double in the pages as she believes her physical urges must make her double be someone in a magazine like this.
