What happened in Chapter 3?

In Chapter Three, Dan and Nerburn smoke a peace pipe and drive up to the top of the ridge. Once there, Dan explains to Nerburg how the Indians lost their land. This lesson included the arrival of the settlers, as well as the arrival of government officials.
