Summarize the situation with the black rat ? What's it to Vera ?

At the beginning of the novel, Bigger has to deal with a black rat, which they find in the apartment. Bigger shoves the dead rat in Vera's face, swinging the animal's body by its tail. Vera passes out: Ma admonishes Bigger for doing this to his sister and orders him to go outside and throw the animal away.
