Native Son

meaning of title "native son"

Is the title of the book meant to be ironic or realistic? Specifically, is Bigger supposed to be the Native Son? Because if he is, it seems ironic to have such a messed up individual represent American youth...

I believe the answer is addressed in the Analysis section of the ClassicNote.

In the psychological fiction of Richard Wright's "Native Son" the main protagonist is Bigger Thomas. As he is born in America and so America is his mother land.

Whether one is black or white, sinner or virtuous motherland don't deject him or her. Everyone is same for the motherland like a mother.

So, Bigger or anyone is same for America and the writer wanted to show in this social fiction that everyone is equal in humanity. And Slavery is harmful for both the slavers and slaveholders also.
