Bigger's family lives in fear. They live in fear of poverty, oppression, and survival. He considers his mother a nag, someone who settled and wants him to do the same thing; she's very religious and does her best to instill faith in God in her son. Bigger rejects her attempts, and the attempts of the family minister.

Bigger's sister Vera is as afraid as he is but acts out her fear in a different way. His brother isn't rebellious and actually envies his brother's position. Bigger's most important family are his friends. They act with him and for him. Not the best of families for certain, but within this family Bigger has a sense of authority and respect.
