Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass

Please explain the following passage to me:: The whisper that my master was my father, may or may not be true; and, true or false, it is of but little consequence to my purpose."

It is found on page 49 of the narrative of fredrick Douglass. Please provide an explanation of what it means for dialectical journals I have to write.

Douglass addresses the rumor that his father was, in fact, a white slaveholder. He notes that whether his father was white or not has no bearing on his goal or the attainment of that goal. It didn't matter who his father was..... what mattered was accomplishing what he'd set out to do.
