Are you referring to Mrs. Auld? I think her initial kindness in showing Douglas how to read and write had a greater effect on Douglas than her later cruelty. Douglas thinks that her cruelty was part of the disease that most slave owners and family succumb to.

Reread paragraphs 2 and 3. Which effected Frederick Douglas the most: The mistress’s kindness or her cruelty? Explain.
