Are you referring to Mrs. Auld? I think that Douglas prefers to remember the kindness rather than the cruelty. Douglas sees racism and cruelty as a disease that affects both slave and slave-owner. Mrs. Auldt was not immune to the disease that hardens and takes people's souls.
