Nappily Ever After is a 2018 Netflix original based on the novel of the same name which was written by Trisha R. Thomas. It is a romantic-comedy film, written by Adam Brooks and Cee Marcellus and directed by Haifaa al-Mansour.
The film follows the story of Violet Jones (Sanaa Lathan). She is a marketing executive who became obsessed with her appearance due to her mother Paulette (Lynn Whitfield). She placed much emphasis on looking flawless at all times.
Violet´s life appears to be perfect since she and her boyfriend both have very successful careers. When her boyfriend surprises her with a puppy instead of the marriage proposal she had hoped for, she is very disappointed. Violet wanted to gain control over her life and decided to shave her hair and rethink her entire career.
Nappily Ever After explores various themes such as self-acceptance and identity. The film aims to be uplifting and charming. However, Violet is fairly one-dimensional and the film´s depiction of her emotions is said to feel superficial to the audience.
