Why does Jim look at Sylvester Lovett with contempt whenever he sees him?

He was especially crazy about Lena. Jim says, "In my ingenuousness I hoped that Sylvester would marry Lena, and thus give all the country girls a better position in town." When he marries a respectable widow instead, Jim is contemptuous of him.
