For what reason does Mrs. Shimerda try to hide the cow? Why do you think Jim’s grandfather goes to so much trouble to end the fighting with the Shimerda family?

Mrs. Shimerda hides the cow, so that it will not be taken for payment. Grandfather knows that it is important for neighbors to get along and work together.
