Beatrice is much older and worldly than Hero. Beatrice has watched men come and go: she understands their nature. Hero is probably in her teens and unsophisticated in the matters of love, sex, and marriage. She is smitten with Claudio like a teenager might be. Beatrice is careful to let Hero enjoy the ecstasy of young love but she (Beatrice) knows that "love" is a double-edged sword when it comes to the role of women in Elizabethan society.
