What did Peter's trip to India symbolize in the novel?

After Peter is rejected by Clarissa, he moves to India and continues a string of failed relationships. I think Peter just can't handle intense emotion, especially when it comes to the opposite sex. Peter uses India as an escape but ends up continuing his behavior there.
