Explain end of empire in Moon Tiger novel by Penelope Lively?

The story ends with Claudia's death. Just before dying, she reflects on her diary entries, and the bitter feelings she has about the past. Her reflections enable her to make peace with the past, and to see that she too will be remembered with memories as imperfect as those she'd held onto for so long.
