On page 31, David's father says, "they are not going to make it into the 20th century until they give up their superstitions and old ways" how do you interpret this comment?

I think he is referring to aboriginal peoples. There is a strong sense of racism cloaked behind a pragmatic logic. Racism was entrenched in high school society at this time.
