I think that Starbuck always knew Ahab's obsession for this whale bordered on insanity. Poor sailor Perth had a tragic life and, as the blacksmith, was forced to make Ahab's insane harpoon. Starbuck wished he had stopped Ahab when he could have and spared Perth.
