how are escape and education associated with one another?

how does melville convey the connection between escape and education, i.e is escape easier when one becomes more educated or is it harder.

I think he meant that escape is education. Certainly a person of education, during those times had the means to do something better than sail off on a ship. For the rest of the people, escape meant an adventure on the seas. The lessons learned were both practical and philosophical. It was an education that could not be bought.
